Facecrime — Two Sided

Facecrime — Two Sided pairs a discreet 1984 Dystopian Dreams chest mark with a large surveillance image on the back of a black unisex tee. A red eye stares from a vintage television as a hand reaches toward its controls. The watcher and the watched trade places.

Artwork and meaning

The eye on the screen is impossible to treat as a passive broadcast. A second little lens rests above the television, and red, yellow and white bars stage the scene like a state poster. The hand suggests someone can tune, frame or judge what is shown. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, “facecrime” names the danger of a disloyal expression. This image asks how much more threatening that idea becomes when a device is invited to interpret every face.

The Dystopian Dreams series

Dystopian Dreams uses familiar propaganda shapes to examine who sees, who decides and how quickly observation turns into accusation. The series often hides its most troubling question beneath the visual confidence of an official campaign. Here the bold back graphic could pass as a broadcast poster until its screen reveals an eye that watches the audience. The contrast between the minimal front mark and the crowded back mirrors the gap between a neat label and the machinery behind it.
