Doublethink — Two Sided

Doublethink — Two Sided is a black unisex T-shirt with a small wordmark at the chest and a vivid back print of crossed hands beneath a red surveillance eye. The poster-like image gives Orwell's idea of believing two conflicting claims at once a gesture you can see.

Artwork and meaning

On the back, the hands cross into an X while a camera-like eye watches from above. A red disc, white rays, yellow ring and distressed edges make the scene feel part warning sign, part official emblem. The hands could signal refusal or forced compliance; the ambiguity fits the word. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, doublethink is the practiced acceptance of contradiction when power requires it. The image holds that uneasy split between what a person sees and what they are expected to say.

The Dystopian Dreams series

Dystopian Dreams examines the ways slogans and repeated images make contradictions seem normal. Doublethink puts the strain of that process in the body itself. In this series, words like Newspeak and Thoughtcrime name different stages of the same pressure on inner life. Doublethink occupies the space where a person already knows a statement is false yet repeats it to survive. The crossed hands make that strain physical; the watching eye shows why the contradiction might be performed in public.
